As you are all aware, the harbour and harbourfront are one of the many great features that Hong Kong is proud of.
The Development Bureau and Harbourfront Commission have been striving to take forward harbourfront enhancement initiatives. In addition to connecting both sides of Victoria Harbour and introducing plentiful hardware installations while providing more flexible software support to create an exciting and diverse harbourfront environment, the Development Bureau and Harbourfront Commission have also been exploring suitable designs and management modes for our harbourfront in recent years, with a view to creating a new brand of “Harbourfront Shared Space”.
The “Harbourfront Shared Space” is an open management mode of public spaces. This “vision-driven” approach aims to allow the public to unleash their creativity and enjoy the harbourfront spaces in their own ways harmoniously with mutual respect, contributing to a more vibrant and diverse experience for visitors. Contrary to traditional parks, the “Harbourfront Shared Space” attempts to break from existing restrictions and limitations and encourage visitors to enjoy the harbourfront space with mutual respect and acceptance. In this space, visitors can freely enjoy themselves every moment in their own ways: jogging, sitting, and even strolling with their pets and cycling.

Thanks to much effort put forward by the Development Bureau and Harbourfront Commission as well as many relevant organizations in the past years, various harbourfront spaces are embedded with innovative and vibrant elements. A good example is The Belcher Bay Promenade opened in 2020, and subsequently followed by four other sites, including the HarbourChill located next to the Wan Chai Ferry Pier, the Water Sports and Recreation Precinct in Wan Chai, the breakwater at East Coast Park Precinct in Fortress Hill and the Tsuen Wan Promenade.
The opening of the Wan Chai harbourfront on December 24, 2021 has extended the continuous waterfront promenade length in Hong Kong Island North by 40 per cent to 7.4 kilometres, allowing visitors to walk along the harbourfront area from Shek Tong Tsui all the way to Fortress Hill, and vice versa.
The Water Sports and Recreation Precinct (Phase 2) is located between the Wan Chai North Temporary Public Transport Interchange and the Hung Hing Road Flyover. It can be accessed from Wan Chai Ferry Pier or the Wan Chai North Temporary Public Transport Interchange by walking for about 5 minutes. It can also be accessed from Exit A5 of MTR Wan Chai Station by walking for about 15 minutes via the footbridge, or from Exit C of MTR Causeway Bay Station by walking for about 9 minutes via the Canal Road West Flyover (see the Annex 1 for the route map).
